Most people enjoy the cool breezes that autumn brings. But this may not be the case if you suffer from psoriasis, a condition affecting the kin and joints. 125 million people worldwide have psoriasis of different types. Regardless of the type, psoriasis usually causes great discomfort. The skin often itches, it may even crack and bleed. Patients who are affected by severe psoriasis have lesions all over the body and in such cases hospitalization may be required.
As fall ushers in colder, drier air, psoriasis can worsen. It is important to take utmost care of your skin and prevent from the condition getting worse. Here are a few tips that are sure to work in keeping psoriasis and the discomfort caused by it at bay.
• Apply olive oil and leave it overnight before washing it. Olive oil helps to loosen psoriasis scales.
• Apply moisturizer within 3 minutes after bathing. By doing this, more moisture will be absorbed by our skin and this prevents scaling of the skin. If possible apply moisturizer 2-3 times a day.
• Avoid vigorous hair combing, sitting on hard surfaces, rubbing your skin with a scrubber. This may eventually lead to peeling and bleeding of the skin.
• Petroleum jelly works best to prevent lips from chapping. It works better than other expensive lip balms. Even when you use lipsticks, make sure you use a coat of petroleum jelly before using the lipstick.
• You can also use petroleum jelly on heels before going to bed. This heals psoriasis scales to a great extent by next morning.
• Here is a good tip to take care of psoriasis affected nails. Soak you nails in warm water for about 5 minutes (don’t overdo this) and soften it by using soap and hot water. Then apply olive oil to your nails twice a day. If done regularly, it prevents fungal and bacterial infection of nail beds.
