All celebrities share common feature in their persona. They are blessed with an extraordinary trait of some kind that extends beyond the ordinary. But a large percentage of celebrities have reported to have experienced mental illness of some kind in their lifetime. It seems like these stars are bound by a creative curse which sure places them above the extraordinary, but leaves them with a traumatizing illness set to wreck their lives.
While several celebrities have experienced mild to moderate depression at some point in their life, some are engulfed by the more threatening Bipolar disorder which has led them to end their lives.
Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose even for experts. It is characterized by extreme mood changes- from episodes of manic depression to those of elated energy levels. It is a long term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person’s life. The disease demands intense struggle form the affected person and it should be admitted that it is a terrible disease to live with. While some celebrities have been outspoken about their struggles with bipolar disorder, others allude mysteriously to manic depression. Britney Spears:
The 26 year old pop sensation has kept her lips sealed about her mental health problems. But rumors about possible bipolar diagnosis have been doing rounds. It is an undisputable fact that she was has been seeing psychiatrists for some time now and that she has been rushed into hospitals a few times due to problems related to her mental health. Her oodles of energy had been heralded from the very beginning of her career. She is someone who is blessed with talent and success from very early in her career as a pop star. But seems like the stress of stardom caught into her that allegedly led her into substance abuse and mental health problems.
Kurt Cobain:
A talented rock star who made the world rock to the insanely enchanting music of his Seattle-based band NIRVANA. The incessant drug use by the grudge rocker Kurt Cobain is undisputed. He has openly acknowledged his addiction to drugs and alcohol following his mental instability and extreme mood swings. TIME magazine included him in the 2002 list of “manic geniuses” who made took his own life at the age of 27 despite his great contributions to music, art and literature.
Marilyn Monroe:
Probably the most celebrated of all Hollywood actresses till date. Her unparalled glow and energy enamored the world but questions surrounding her personal life and her death remain unanswered even today. Those who knew her have acknowledge her frequently shifting moods, ecstatic to the point of madness at times and turning into a manic depressive otherwise. Monroe did have her psychiatrist visit her frequently and give her a regular dosage of sleeping pills and other drugs to relieve her of her hypersensitive nature.
Several other noted personalities including scientists like Newton and writers like Emily Dickenson, Mark Twain and Virginia Woolf are known to have suffered from bipolar disorder. There sure must be a long list of such talented personalities who have been troubled by the trauma of bipolar disorder.
Struggling with mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and depression can often make life seem bleak and future prospects seem blurred. It can be inspirational to learn that someone famous, someone who has achieved apparent success understands the same battles. It then seems that gifted creativity is especially susceptible in a growingly practical world.
