Overweight problem is not just matter of good looks anymore.  Obesity is a factor associated with a number of ailments. Many case studies in the past have established the relatedness of obesity and heart disease.   Although several people try to shed extra weight through diet and exercise, many end up getting little benefit from the effort.  Patients with such vain results for weight loss are opting for surgical methods of weight loss such as gastric bypass.

According to a recent study, the risk of obese people having a heart attack or other cardiac complications is reduced substantially after they undergo gastric bypass surgery.  The study gives a message that gastric bypass can be considered to reduce cardiovascular risk (in obese patients) when conservative treatment options have failed.

Gastric bypass is often linked to post-surgical complications.  However, many researches have proved otherwise.  In a research from the University of California, obese people who underwent gastric bypass surgery were assessed for the occurrence of complications after surgery.  Only 18 percent of the patients had minor post-surgical complications.  Most complications after surgery are treatable and hence, the surgery is considerably safe.

In yet another research, patients who had undergone gastric bypass surgery were involved.  During the research, it was found that the surgery had reduced the risk for future cardiovascular problem anywhere from 18 percent to 79 percent.  Also, the predicted chance of having a heart attack or need for heart surgery or dying of heart disease over 10 years fell from 7 percent to 3 percent after undergoing bariatric surgery. For people who did not have surgery, the probability fell from 7 percent to 6 percent.

Several such studies have shown the long-term benefits of bariatric surgery and proved that the surgery decreases the risk of cardiovascular problem in obese patients.  The positive results from gastric bypass have renewed the hope of losing weight among obese patients who have been under dieting process for a long time.  With the expertise of a specialized surgeon, one is sure to reap all the benefits of gastric bypass surgery.
