Save your spine before it is too late

November 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Life in the metros  is moving in the fast lane.  You start your day with a drive in your vehicle whose seat looks comfortable, but is injurious to your spine.  As you reach your office, you take the elevator to rech your seat at office.  Your seat in front of the system is your world for the next 8 or 9 hours of the day.  Like this was not enough, you reach home to become a couch potato in front of the television until you go to bed.  Your salary meter might be running at high speed through the hours of work, but little do you know that your spine is in battle with your chair and is being stressed through the day.

The consequence of such sedentary lifestyle is sure to bring back and neck pain that can take dangerous overtones and lead to chronic spinal anomalies such as slip-disc, disc prolapsed, one or more paralyzed limbs etc.  This comes as a special warning to those who spend long hours  in front of computers day after day without even taking enough care to supplement this lifestyle with exercise and a good diet which compounds the problem.

Doctors point out that when a person sits in a wrong position and constantly bends in front of the computer, the muscles stretch.  When this continues for several months and years, the muscles which are in constant contraction put tremendous pressure on the spinal disc which finally bursts.  Though this was a natural way of ageing, modern lifestyle has brought in a sad situation where people as young as 20 years old are victims of spine problems.

When the lower back is under stress, the intra-disc pressure increases by 11 times when sitting for longer rather than lying or walking.  Even excessive work out at the gym can lead to spinal problems.

Orthopedists have reported an alarming rise in such cases among youngsters in the recent years.  For most patients, treatment for disc prolapsed is rest, medication and physiotherapy but there are patient who experience neurological complications of disc prolapse, foot drop and even bowel and bladder incontinence, who need surgery.

But as the old adage goes “prevention is better than cure”.  It is easier to make a few alterations in your lifestyle such as practicing tosit in a proper posture, committing to a healthier diet and some exercise and most of all lead an active and happy lifestyle that can help you avoid the painful aftermath of spinal problems.
