The recent revision in the reimbursement rules of NHS has decided to treat the cost coverage of medical expenses of patients opting to fix their medical issues through medical travel is not entitled for reimbursement.
The option of medical tourism which had allowed Britons to skip long waiting lists back home and turn to medical travel to get treatments quickly, are at ease anymore since they will have to fund their medical trips to other nations without any aid from NHS.
The European Union began working on the draft specifying its rules regarding medical treatment options following the case of a 75-yr Briton lady who got her replacement done from France. It cost her £3,900 and fixed her hip problem of course. But there was bad news awaiting her back home since the NHS had decided not to reimburse the cost of her treatment. However, her case was upheld by the EU which held that she had to opt for treatment from France owing to the long waiting period in Briton and that she was entitled for reimbursement.
The European commission is yet to publish a draft directive which could be acceptable to UK and one that would protect NHS as well. According to the Daily Mail newspaper, the document would be published shortly to allow patients to shop around freely across 27 member states of UK.
